The Fishing Industry is one of the Leading Job Generators in Ecuador

With its extensive coasts and rich marine biodiversity, Ecuador stands out as a significant contributor to employment through fishing and aquaculture. From artisanal fishermen to workers in processing plants and distribution, the fishing sector offers diverse and meaningful job opportunities throughout the country.

During the pandemic, the Ecuadorian fishing sector has stood out notably. According to the National Chamber of Fisheries, in February 2023, it recorded a growth of 19.5% compared to February 2022. The reception of a new production line in markets such as Africa is highlighted, especially of pelagics, both in their natural state and canned, originating from small fish such as mackerel and pinjack.

It is estimated that this sector employs directly about 30,000 people and indirectly around 120,000, with 53% of these jobs held by women. During 2022, more than 635,000 tons of fish were caught in Ecuadorian waters.

With its commitment to sustainability and innovation, the Ecuadorian fishing sector continues to be a fundamental pillar in the generation of employment and economic development of the country.
