Law to Sanction Illegal Practices in Ecuador
With the purpose of safeguarding tuna exports to the European Union (EU), the National Government has unveiled a modernization plan for the fishing sector in response to the bloc's demand to intensify the fight against illegal fishing.
The Government plans to introduce new legislation that will establish sanctions against illegal fishing, as well as the implementation of monitoring systems that will require an investment of $18 million. The EU, being the main destination for Ecuadorian tuna, has urged the country since October to ensure that the product sent to its market does not come from illegal fishing.
Production Minister Iván Ontaneda stated: "The EU has reiterated its confidence in the country. We believe that, after this wake-up call, we will emerge strengthened. We are taking concrete measures and have a clear roadmap."
The new law, which will replace the existing legislation dating back to 1974, aims to impose sanctions to eradicate illegal fishing in national territory.
