GEF Project: Ecuador leads the push for legal and sustainable fishing

Ecuador plays a key role in the GEF Project, a regional initiative with Peru and Chile aimed at combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. In a workshop held in July, the countries advanced the design of electronic catch documentation and traceability systems (eCDT) to ensure legal, sustainable, and transparent fishing. Ecuador stands out for its leadership in this digital transformation that strengthens management and regional cooperation.

IUU fishing poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems and coastal communities in Ecuador, Peru, and Chile. This practice causes overfishing, reduces biodiversity, and impacts local incomes. Moreover, lack of effective control and resources limits access to international markets demanding greater traceability and transparency.

The workshop included analysis of current traceability systems, integration of gender perspectives, and identification of synergies with other initiatives. This joint effort reflects the commitment of the three countries to conserve their marine resources and move toward fairer, more resilient, and sustainable fishing in the region.
